Voter registration deadline April 1 for municipal primaries

Mississippi voters who want to cast a ballot in the upcoming municipal primary elections have until April 1 to complete their voter registration application.

Municipal clerks’ offices throughout Mississippi will be open on Saturday, April 1 from 8am to 12pm to accept last-minute in-person voter registration applications.

Voters can also register by mail. Applications must be postmarked by April 1 to be eligible to vote in the May 2 primaries.

Mississippians who are already registered to vote, but have recently moved or changed their name, must update their registration information in order to cast a ballot in the correct precinct on primary election day.

An individual is eligible to register to vote if he or she is at least 18 years old, or will be 18 years old by June 6, 2017 (the date of the municipal general election); is a Mississippi resident; has not been convicted in a Mississippi court of a disenfranchising crime; and has not been adjudicated as mentally incompetent.

For more information about registering to vote, visit the secretary of state’s website or call the elections division at 601.576.2550.
